Evaluation standard
The strongest buyer intelligence platforms connect customer outcomes, people, buying groups and current movement. They show the evidence behind each priority and carry the result into the workflows revenue teams already use.
What should a B2B buyer intelligence platform actually do?
A useful platform turns customer history and current buyer movement into a decision the revenue team can explain. It connects the characteristics of a strong customer with the people researching a problem, the colleagues connected to the decision and the outcomes recorded in sales systems. For the category definition and operating model, read What Is Buyer Intelligence?. The output should answer four practical questions: Is this company a strong fit? Which people are showing relevant movement? Who else belongs in the buying group? What should marketing or sales do next?
Buyer intelligence = customer evidence + market fit + person behavior + buying-group context + commercial outcomes
Each component reduces a different source of uncertainty. Together they create a priority the team can explain.
Why account data alone is not enough
Firmographic data can show that a company is in the right industry, geography or size range. It cannot tell the team whether the company resembles customers that create durable value, whether relevant people are actively moving or whether a real buying group is forming. That limitation becomes expensive when a broad target market produces thousands of technically eligible accounts. Sellers receive long lists, marketing spreads budget across weak segments and leaders cannot explain why one account should receive attention before another. People-level context matters because companies do not research, build consensus or take meetings. People do. LinkedIn describes its sales intelligence around finding the right buyers, understanding leads and accounts and using real-time, people-powered data to begin conversations with the people who matter. That reflects a wider shift from static lists toward current buyer understanding. The four layers of useful buyer intelligence
| Layer | Question it answers | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Customer evidence | What patterns are associated with strong outcomes? | Won customers, retention, expansion, sales cycle, loss reasons |
| Market fit | Which companies resemble those patterns? | Business model, operating complexity, use case, firmographics |
| Person movement | Which identifiable buyers are showing relevant behavior? | Research activity, site visits, engagement, role changes |
| Buying-group context | Who is connected to the decision? | Economic buyer, champion, users, technical and risk stakeholders |
A decision framework for buyer intelligence
1. Learn from customer outcomes
Start with customers won, opportunities lost and the commercial outcomes that followed. A revenue team should distinguish customers that merely closed from customers that retained, expanded and reached value quickly. These patterns become the evidence behind a modern ideal customer profile.2. Understand what companies actually do
Industry codes and employee bands are useful filters, but they often miss the operating reality that creates demand. Examine the company’s business model, workflows, customers, technology and commercial motion. An AI ICP builder should help interpret these signals instead of relying on a narrow list of fields.3. Observe people, not anonymous activity totals
Person-level behavior makes market activity actionable. The objective is not to collect every signal. It is to identify relevant movement from people whose roles connect them to the problem. Website activity, research behavior and engagement become more useful when they can be evaluated against fit and role.4. Reconstruct the buying group
A single engaged contact rarely represents an enterprise decision. Identify the people who can champion, evaluate, approve, block and use the solution. Gartner reported in 2025 that B2B buying groups commonly span five to 16 people across as many as four functions. That makes buying-group identification a core intelligence task.5. Activate one shared priority
Buyer intelligence should end in action. Marketing can build the right audience and message. Sales can identify the right people and enter with context. Leadership can see why resources are being concentrated. This shared view supports stronger sales and marketing alignment.Buyer intelligence versus intent data
Intent data is one possible input. Buyer intelligence is the larger decision system. Intent can indicate that research may be occurring around a topic. It does not, by itself, establish customer fit, identify the people behind the activity, show the buying group or connect the signal to a likely commercial outcome. A team can have high activity and low relevance. It can also have a highly relevant buyer whose movement is subtle. Useful buyer intelligence evaluates activity in context instead of treating volume as proof. How to evaluate a buyer intelligence platform
- Evidence: Can it learn from your own wins, losses and customer outcomes?
- People: Can it identify and evaluate real people, not only accounts or anonymous topics?
- Context: Can it connect roles into a plausible buying group?
- Reasoning: Can it explain why a buyer or account is prioritized?
- Activation: Can marketing and sales use the same intelligence in their existing workflows?
- Feedback: Do new outcomes improve the model over time?
What good buyer intelligence changes
Good buyer intelligence narrows the market without making it static. It helps marketing reduce wasted audience spend, gives sellers a defensible reason to act and makes pipeline reviews more useful. Leaders can see whether acquisition is concentrating on buyers with stronger fit and meaningful movement. The result is a connected operating view: learn from the customers that created value, recognize similar companies, identify the people behind current activity, map the buying group and coordinate the next action.Sources: LinkedIn Sales Navigator; Gartner, B2B buyer team research, 2025.
